How to Post a Job That Attracts Best Freelancers

The Job Posting form on Guru has been designed to capture your requirements and help you find freelancers online and get quotes from the best qualified Freelancers. It all begins with filling the Job Posting form with job details to get the attention of the right Freelancers.

The skills you are looking for and the context in which they will be used for your job must be included in your Job Posting. For example, you could be looking for a developer with the skills to create an e-commerce app. The skills required to create an e-commerce app for 10 products are different from the skills required to create an eCommerce app with an expanding catalogue containing thousands of products. So, defining the scope of the job is integral to describing the job itself.

The first 2 fields of the Job Posting form on Guru specifically help convey the scope of the job.

  1. Job Title – Mention the exact skill that you are looking for within the Job Title. This will ensure that the right Freelancers pay attention to your Job Posting.  The Job Title also sets the context for the content you add as “Job Description”.
  2. Job Description – Share details and specifics of the job. You should include important details like the exact work you want to get done, expected deliverables, roles and responsibilities of the Freelancer, project timelines, and any relevant files that the Freelancer should refer to. This helps the Freelancer understand the job better and send a relevant quote.

When you put the most important skill in the title, you increase the chances of the Job Posting being read by the right Freelancers.  By giving context to the skill with a detailed Job Description, you ensure that Freelancers who match your requirements send you a quote.

Example of an ideal Job Title and Description

Job Title: Develop App for e-commerce site

Job Description: Need an app for an e-commerce site with 5 product categories and multiple sub-categories and an expanding product portfolio. The app should be developed for both Android and iOS platforms. Completion time: 4 months. The job will require wireframing, designing, development and testing of the application.

While the above Job Description sets the context for the skill required, you should also include information that provides more clarity to Freelancers. You could share current stage of the job process you want to follow and next steps.

The app will allow users to search, browse and buy apparels. Broadly, there are 8 unique pages – user registration, product listing, category listing, cart, order pages, account info, bulk orders and some static content pages. The user journeys have already been documented and ready to move into wireframe stage. The process would require creation of low-fidelity wireframes and move into making high-fidelity wireframes upon approvals. Once wireframes are approved by our internal product and audit teams, we will move into development and testing.

It is recommended that you include expected deliverables along with timelines. This helps Freelancers assess the job viability and accordingly set the payment terms when sending the quote.

Next, select the Category, Subcategory and the Top Skills that best describe your job requirements. For example, if you are looking for a developer to develop an app for an Ecommerce site select > (Category) Programming & Dev > (Sub-Category) Apps & Mobile > (Top Skills) e-commerce, IOS development, and any additional skills you require. You can also add skills which you might have missed when filling out the Job Description.  For example, if you require wireframing to be done using Sketch, simply add “Sketch” as a skill.

Selecting the Category, Subcategory and Top Skills also helps correctly classify your Job Posting, making it easier for the right Freelancers on Guru to find it.

Next, choose a payment term to help the Freelancer understand how you want to pay for the job. Payment terms help a Freelancer understand the nature of their involvement and risk in the Job. You can choose from:

a) Fixed Price: For jobs that have a fixed budget and a defined set of deliverables. Indicate an approximate budget for the job.

b) Hourly: When effort cannot be estimated upfront and you want to pay based on the time spent. Select the job duration, effort required per week, and the minimum-maximum rate per hour you are willing to pay for the job.

c) Not Sure: When you want to decide the payment terms later when forming the Agreement.

As a rule of thumb, the more specific and detailed your Job Posting is, the more relevant quotes you get.

Lastly, define any specific preferences so you may find the ideal Freelancer for your job.

a) Visibility – You may want to maximize the visibility of your Job Posting by making it accessible to everyone on Guru and outside Guru (search engines) or limit its reach to Freelancers on Guru or, limit it to only Freelancers you specifically invite on Guru.

b) Location – If you prefer to hire skilled Freelancers from a particular location, select that in this section.

c) Get Quotes Till – Job Postings are open for 30 days (by default) so that you get enough quality quotes to make a choice. You may change this date as required.
